Where to Go in December?

December can feel a little grey and chilly, especially in the UK, which is why we’re always dreaming of sunshine and warmer days. If you’re wondering where to go for a winter escape, Tenerife should be at the top of your list. With its year-round sunny weather, gorgeous beaches, and plenty to see and do, this Canary Island is the ideal destination for families, couples, or anyone needing a break from the cold.

The Perks of Visiting Tenerife in December

  • ☀️ Sunny and Warm Weather:
While much of Europe is wrapped in scarves and coats, Tenerife’s southern coast basks in average daytime temperatures of 22–24°C (that’s t-shirt weather!). It’s warm enough for the beach during the day and just cool enough for a light jacket in the evenings.

  • 🏖️ Beaches and Water Adventures:
Tenerife’s beaches are perfect for a winter getaway, from golden sands like Playa de Las Teresitas to natural volcanic beaches like Playa de La Arena. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try water sports like paddleboarding or surfing—the water is cool but still enjoyable!

  • 🍽️ Amazing Food:
From fresh seafood to local Canarian dishes like papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) with mojo sauce, Tenerife’s food scene is bursting with flavour. Whether you’re dining by the beach or in a cosy local restaurant, there’s something for everyone.

  • 💸 Affordable Pre-Christmas Travel:
December can be a budget-friendly time to visit Tenerife if you plan your trip for early in the month. Flights and accommodation prices typically rise closer to the Christmas holidays, but before then, you can snag some great deals (which is what we always do)

  • ✈️ Easy Accessibility:
Tenerife is incredibly well-connected, with two airports (North and South) offering flights from nearly every major UK city. Budget airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Wizz Air have frequent flights, making it easy to find something within your budget. We’ve flown mostly Easy Jet as we feel they have lots of options.

  • 🏨 Accommodation for Every Budget:
Whether you’re looking for a luxury resort, a cosy family-friendly hotel, or a self-catering apartment, Tenerife has endless options. Most accommodations in the south, where the weather is warmest, cater especially well to families and holidaymakers. We’ve done both hotels and Airbnb’s depending on budget & type of experience we were looking for.

  • 🌴 Natural Beauty and Adventure:
Tenerife isn’t just beaches—it’s home to Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, where you can explore volcanic landscapes (feels like you’re on Mars!!) or take a cable car ride for epic views. In December, you can even experience snowy peaks while still enjoying the warmth at lower altitudes. It’s just the most wonderful island!

Tips for Visiting Tenerife in December

  • Stick to the South: The southern part of the island (e.g., Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) is where you’ll find the warmest and sunniest weather in December. It’ll be 4-5 degrees colder in the North of the island.

  • Pack Smart: Bring lightweight clothing for the daytime but don’t forget a jumper or light jacket for cooler evenings, or if you are planning on doing a lot of hiking, do bring a more versatile jacket and proper walking shoes/boots.

  • Book Early for Savings: If you’re travelling in early December, book flights and accommodation as early as possible to snag the best deals, although early December is already quite cheap anytime you book!

  • Rent a Car: To explore beyond the beaches, renting a car is highly recommended, so many car rental companies! We’ve gone with Europcar, Sixt & TopCar. Tenerife’s roads are very well-maintained, and driving around the island is literally, a breeze (although quite hilly in some places and if you’re not comfortable with a manual, we recommend an automatic!)
