October Half Term - 3 day hiking in Italy

Hey there, fellow adventurers! If you're looking for a family getaway that combines stunning scenery, a sprinkle of adventure, and a side of delicious food, let me take you on our recent journey to North Italy. With the October half-term upon us, we decided it was high time to stretch our legs and explore the breathtaking landscapes of this beautiful region.

Touchdown in Verona

We kicked off our adventure by flying into Verona - yes, the very same city that inspired the tale of Romeo and Juliet! After picking up our rental car (which, let’s be honest, is a must for exploring the area), we hit the road with excitement bubbling in the back seat. A little tip: renting a car is the way to go in North Italy, as it gives you the freedom to discover hidden gems that you might miss if you’re relying on public transport.

Day 1: Hiking at Cascate di Saent

Our first full day was all about getting our hiking boots dirty at Cascate di Saent. Nestled in the mountains near the town of Madonna di Campiglio, this spot is a real stunner. The waterfalls cascade down like nature’s very own water show, and trust me, the sound of rushing water is music to the ears—especially when you’re surrounded by the vibrant autumn leaves.

As we hiked, we couldn’t help but pause to take in the views and snap some photos (because, of course, no hike is complete without a few hundred pictures, right?). A couple of hours into our hike, we decided it was time to refuel, and boy, did we find the perfect spot!

Lunch at Malga Stablasola

On our way back, we stopped at Malga Stablasola, a charming mountain hut that serves up some of the most delicious local fare you can imagine. Picture this: hearty polenta, rich cheeses, and a stunning view of the mountains. It was the perfect way to recharge after our morning of hiking. The friendly staff treated us like family, and if that doesn’t warm your heart, I don’t know what will!

Day 2: Lago di Tovel

Day two was all about lakes and more lakes. We made our way to Lago di Tovel, and let me tell you, this lake is like something out of a postcard. The water was so clear it felt like we’d stumbled into a fairy tale. We spent the day walking around the lake, soaking in the sights, and taking our time to enjoy the peace and quiet - well, as much peace as you can get with a little one in tow!

Day 3: Driving along Lake Garda

On our final day, we decided to take a scenic drive along Lake Garda. With winding roads that hug the shoreline, it’s like a movie scene at every turn. We made several stopovers, each one offering stunning views and little gems of cafes and shops. We even stumbled upon a gelateria in the town of Sirmione that had the audacity to serve a flavour called "Stracciatella" that was simply divine (we may have gone back for seconds, or thirds...).

Final Thoughts

Three days in North Italy may not seem like enough, (really isn’t!) but we packed in plenty of adventure, laughter, and unforgettable moments. If you’re considering a family getaway, I can’t recommend this region enough. With its dramatic landscapes, friendly locals, and delicious food, it’s a trip that truly has it all.

So, grab your hiking boots (we need new ones!) and a hearty appetite, and get ready to explore the wonders of North Italy. Who knows what tales you’ll bring back from your adventures?

Happy travels, and see you on our next adventure!
